Chapter 5: A Night with the Girls

As I was leaving Angela caught me in the parking lot. She always parks right next to me, so she always finds me in the parking lot. “I heard you got your first patient today!” she said cheerily. She used to be a cheerleader and found her calling in Psychology. Go figure. “Yeah, he’s not even wounded though, physically.” Angela raised and eyebrow, “Oh, should I go visit him?” She asked half playfully as if she knew we kissed. “I don’t know. I’ll let you know tomorrow.”

“Mmmmk. Let’s go celebrate! Casey’s off today so she’s probably already halfway there anyway!” We went to our quarters and after getting settled in the girls started gushing. “So, what’s he like? Is he young? Is he old? Have you been ‘initiated’ yet?” Casey asked gushingly. “He’s mostly asleep and he’s 36. What do you mean initiated?” Angela slapped Casey’s arm playfully, “Shut up!” and then made a very serious face at her, and turned to me smiling, “There’s no initiation, Casey is just being her usual dorky self, right Casey?” I smiled back, enjoying the wine. “Yeah….right, so how’s that vibrator going?” Casey was getting at something I didn’t understand, but after a couple of glasses of wine I didn’t care. “I love it, like I had no idea you could feel that way!” Shocked, Casey blurted out, “You mean, you never masturbated before?” Casey blurted out.

“Casey, we both know Joyce is a complete virgin and that’s fine.” Angela winked at me. The rest of the night went on with talk about different nurses and doctors and mentions of patients but not much else. When it was time for bed, Casey stumbled a little while slurring, “Never think you’re going to get the one you want. Ugh. Always some higher-ranking official. Usually smaller dicks too.”

I didn’t get it and was too drunk to care. It was 22:00 and time for bed. I could barely sleep over thinking about Paul and why I cared for him in that moment and why I would even think someone as attractive as him would want anything to do with me, a plump black chick when he was a fit white man. I fell asleep holding my pillow and fighting back tears about my own body and emotions that were out of control. I like to think of myself as rational.

But maybe mama was right. Maybe I should have stayed at home. They wouldn’t train me up the ladder back home and I only have nine months until I’m a nurse practitioner, albeit with no patients except this one to date. But regardless. My cousins are doing better, everyone is doing better, and I’m happy most of the time. I get to go on leave again in nine months and see everyone. I miss my grandma’s talks and my mama worrying over me. I don’t have time for guys and they probably don’t want me anyway.
